Some (Not All) Kitties Find Homes at Sarge’s Cat Adoption Day.
June 29th, 2008 Categories: Community
Today we held a Cat Adoption Day for Sarge’s Animal Rescue Foundation at the Waynesville COLDWELL BANKER Kasey & Associates office. Three of the kitties found homes, but there were too many more that didn’t. It seems that cat buyers (even when the cats are priced at a big discount) are as endangered a species as home buyers these days.
Sarge’s is a wonderful “shelter without walls” here in Haywood County, NC. Sarge’s currently saves animals that come from the Haywood County Animal Shelter by placing them in foster homes until their new homes are found. Their ultimate goal is to build “an Adoption Center with quarantine space, comfortable pens, outdoor runs, a cattery, areas for training and grooming.” ©Susie Blackmon Photos
Please sign up here if you would like to donate your time or your money to help Sarge’s, and check Sarge’s website for the next adoption day. Give a kitty a home or be a foster ‘parent.’ And please neuter or spay your animals.
THANK YOU to those who adopted a kitty today!

I am a fool for my little kitty, Boo, even though she hissed at me when I cranked up Barry White’s Let the Music Play the other morning and danced with her! She will put up with my constant real estate blogging, but not that dancing.

Want to dance with your cat? Play Barry (below)!
See you Sunday!

Rotary Induction, Laurel Ridge Country Club, Waynesville, NC.
June 25th, 2008 Categories: Community, Videos and Slideshows
Last night I attended the induction ceremony for the new officers of the Rotary Club of Waynesville, of which I am a member. Cecil Yount is our new President. You may notice him in the photos (he is the one with the sweet tea and no hair)!
The ceremony was held at the beautiful Laurel Ridge Country Club in Waynesville. There were over 100 people in attendance, including Rotarians Brig. General W. Thomas Meredith, pictured with Rick Smith, Realtor (828.400.5119). Also pictured are Lyn Donley, Billy and Karen Case, and your’s truly, Susie Blackmon, Bloggess/Realtor.
It is an honor to be acquainted with Brig. General W. Thomas Meredith, and I love his philosophy (and the title of his book…) “Lead, Follow or Get the Hell Out of the Way.” Not to mention… I love men in uniform!

Kissing and Pickin’ in Canton, NC.
June 10th, 2008 Categories: Community
Yesterday I met with a Seller in Canton, NC (”Where the Mountains Kiss the Sky”) and was pleasantly reminded of its charm, ‘outdoorsie’ flavor, and proximity to Asheville (13 miles). Canton is the second largest city in Haywood County, NC, is very photogenic… and residents enjoy activities such as “Pickin‘ in the Park” every Friday night from June until Labor Day, and a Recreation Park complete with swimming pool. Just visiting Canton is relaxing, and it makes you want to ‘get you some barbecue’ or (in my case) ‘kiss you a Cowboy!’ Imagine if you lived there!

National Doughnut Day in Haywood County, NC!
June 6th, 2008 Categories: Community, Eat Your Way Through Town
Wondering where you can go to celebrate National Doughnut Day today in Haywood County, NC?
Whitman’s Bakery on Main Street in Downtown Waynesville is a good place to start. Read my article about Whitman’s Bakery and their fresh-baked goodies right here.
Ingles Market also has a very tempting case full of doughnuts (among many other things) and, now, a Starbucks to get your Mocha Java with an extra shot to wash down that glazed sugar doughnut… or two. Ummm, I can smell those fresh, warm, naughty doughnuts right now. Ingles contact information: here.

Finding Your Aperture Priority and Lady’s Slippers in Lake Junaluska, NC.
May 15th, 2008 Categories: Community, Things to Do
Treasures and adventure abound in Haywood County, NC. Two of Haywood County’s, and my, favorite treasures are a gifted artist and nature photographer, Bob Grytten, and the Corneille Bryan Native Garden in Lake Junaluska, where Mr. Grytten, lucky for me, took his photography class yesterday.
Bob Grytten, Nature Photographer, Artist, Teacher
Bob Grytten is a Waynesville, NC artist and published nature photographer (Bob Grytten, Photographer, Googled) who also finds the time to teach photography. Not only does he teach you, among many other things, to see the ‘light’ in capturing images, he takes you to places you might not find on your own (I speak for myself), like the Corneille Bryan Native Garden, and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park where the elk do roam.
Mr. Grytten’s photographic images (photo credit Bob Grytten) are represented by Burr Gallery on Main Street, Waynesville. You can reach Bob at Bob Grytten Images, PO Box 1153, Waynesville, NC 28786, via email at BobGRY@aol.com, or by phone (828-627-0245).
I hear some of the furniture he makes can be seen, and purchased, from Twigs & Leaves Gallery located in historic downtown Waynesville.
Corneille Bryan Native Garden
The Corneille Bryan Native Garden, located [hidden] in the Lake Junaluska community in Haywood County, NC, is a quiet sanctuary containing native wildflowers and foliage. Aren’t the Yellow Lady’s-slipper blooms (Cypripedium parviflorum (Cypripedium calceolus), in full regalia yesterday, beautiful (even with the date stamp)!

Yesterday I stopped by the sixth annual Whole Bloomin’ Thing Festival before they even opened for business and took a few photos (see slide show below). The Festival, held in Frog Level in Waynesville, NC, promotes local agriculture, local farmers, local artisans and craftspeople, and serves as the official kick-off of Buy Local Week which runs through May 17th, all in conjunction with the BUY HAYWOOD Market Development Project, which you can read more about here. Find local Farmers’ Markets here.

Can You Name the Actress Who is Building a Home in WNC’s Balsam Mountain Preserve?
May 6th, 2008 Categories: Community, Developments and Subdivisions
The Wall Street Journal reported that Actress Andie MacDowell is building a home in beautiful, eco-friendly Balsam Mountain Preserve, just 10 to 15 minutes from downtown Waynesville, NC!
“Ms. MacDowell, 50 years old, starred in “Groundhog Day” and “Four Weddings and a Funeral.” A year ago, she paid about $1 million for a vacant lot of just under two acres in the Blue Ridge Mountains, part of the Balsam Mountain Preserve, a 4,400-acre development of 3,000 acres of protected land and 354 home sites. The houses, at elevations from 3,000 to 4,700 feet, can’t be larger than 4,500 square feet and must use materials that blend the building into the environment, according to a design-review board.“
