Will Cataloochee Wilderness Resort be home to a new Cabela’s in Jonathan Creek, NC?
December 28th, 2007 Categories: Cataloochee Wilderness Resort
January 2008 should bring new information and more controversy involving the development of the proposed Cataloochee Wilderness Resort here in Jonathan Creek, NC. Meetings with the Haywood County Commissioners, as well as a to-be-announced meeting between some of the principals and the public, are sure to generate more interest and more drama. The Haywood County spokesman for the Cataloochee Wilderness Resort, Frank Singleton, answered a few more questions recently during a visit to the office of Smoky Mountain News, including questions about Dean Moses, Cabela’s and Bass Pro Shops.
“SMN: Have retailers been secured for this project? The plan calls for a Bass Pro Shop or Cabela’s.
FS: There are confidentiality agreements in place with the retailers. I’ve had direct consultation with some of these retail brands, including one specific one as an anchor right now. None of those things have been firmed up, and absolutely no contracts are in place with those folks. Conversations have taken place informally.…
SMN: What is Dean Moses’ involvement in the project?
FS: Dean is a consultant to Cataloochee Companies LLC with Carlton Consulting. That’s his role, but there are probably 25, maybe 30 companies involved in this whole thing.”
So, will we soon see Neiman-Marcus in Jonathan Creek?

Is there snow on ‘Snow Tube Mountain’ in Maggie Valley, NC for our Christmas/New Year’s visitors?
December 26th, 2007 Categories: Hot Local Topics
Here is a photo of our snow tubing mountain in Maggie Valley, NC
taken a couple of days ago… we need more snow, but die-hard snow
tubers don’t care. As I write this morning it is still dark outside, but a crunchy mixture of light snow and ice is falling from the sky. Could we have our White Christmas a day late?
Ghost Town in the Sky, closed for the season, is right across the street from the ‘Snow Tube Mountain,’ and allowed for a contrasting and clear shot of the lift lines that take you on an exhilarating ride to the top for food and fun.
Here’s a link to the Cataloochee Ski Area if you want to check out the ski conditions. Let’s go skiing in Maggie Valley, NC!

Cataloochee Wilderness Resort spokesman, Frank Singleton, is answering a few questions. Have some land you want to sell in Jonathan Creek?
December 25th, 2007 Categories: Cataloochee Wilderness Resort
Frank Singleton, the spokesman for the Cataloochee Wilderness Resort, is answering questions posed to him by the public, and below are the first two questions and answers that were published.
“1. What about all the homes located in your proposed resort areas? Do you plan on buying them out or building around them? One of the articles stated that phase three encompassed 1,000 acres and would include 120,250 homes. How are you going to manage that when there are already many, many homes and acreage already owned there? Do you plan on building the single family homes on zero lot lines like Florida has, practically on top of each other?
Answer: We are in the very early, preliminary stages of a multi-year development, so please understand if some of the answers are incomplete, it’s because we are not at the point where it is possible to answer some questions in great detail. As far as homes already in the proposed development area, some of those homes may be purchased and incorporated into the development. We may have to build around others depending on the property and elements like price, necessity and other options. As with any large-scale development and there are many examples in North Carolina and the Southeast there is a great degree of flexibility and compromise built into the master planning process. Although specific lot sizes have not been determined, the homes and lot size aspects of the development are in keeping with the marketplace of buyers and the aesthetics of the area; generally two units per acre would be a fair average overall. There will be no zero lot line or high-density residential element. Single family lots will be large and the overall development plan includes significant amounts of greenspace and recreational space, as well as wilderness areas.
2. I own property near or close to one of the first three phases. How do I let the developers know I am willing to sell?
Answer: The project works with a separate land buying company that acts as the exclusive agent for acquiring property for Cataloochee Wilderness Resorts. Call 828-280-2165 for details or to speak to a representative.”
Frank will be facing Haywood County’s own version of the White House Press Room soon!
